MT Tries Out All-Wheel Drive Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG S

Mercedes’ CLS63 is basically an E-Class with a far more tapered, sportier body but with less room inside, and in AMG trim, it ends up costing almost $7,000 more. MotorTrend’s latest review of it tries to find reason behind its purchase over that of the regular sedan, weighing in its pros and cons.

Handling is said to be pretty much identical between the two, and reviewer Carlos Lago is keen to point out that the steering feels very particularly nice and allows for good placement on the road. However, he reports that the car doesn’t really feel that sporty on anything other than a straight road, where in S guise (with 577 hp on tap), it screams to sixty in 3.4 seconds.

Its figure eight and braking performance are also very impressive for a barge of its size and weight, though you can’t get away from physics and the car leans heavily in corners or squats onto its rear tires under really hard launches (the kind you need to achieve the aforementioned acceleration time…).

Not the sportiest of choices, then, but it has head-turning design and a surprisingly bubbly exhaust note for a turbocharged car; if you owned one you’d defend it to the death!

Mercedes Confirms 4.0-Liter Twin Turbo V8 for C 63 AMG, Will Launch in 2015

While BMW was revealing the M3 and M4 at the Detroit Auto Show, Mercedes-Benz was announcing that the C 63 AMG will arrive in about a year from now with a new downsized 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine.

Tobias Moers, Mercedes AMG’s product chief, confirmed to Auto Express that the new C 63 AMG, which is based on the latest C-Class that also made its world premiere at the Detroit Auto Show, is “about a year” away.

The current C 63 AMG’s naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8 engine will be replaced by a smaller unit, continuing the downsizing trend initiated by Mercedes AMG with the SL 63 AMG, S 63 AMG and E 63 AMG, all of which are motivated by a 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged V8.

However, in the case of the upcoming C 63 AMG, the engine will be even smaller, as Boers hinted at a 4.0-liter unit. “You are now familiar with our 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine? Well you can imagine what happens when you put two of those together,” he said.

While Boers didn’t give any information about output, the new 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 unit should produce well over 450hp in standard trim and possibly over 500hp with the optional Performance Pack.

New Mercedes-Benz GLA 45 AMG Brings High-Performance to Compact SUVs

What Mercedes-Benz called a concept at last November's LA Auto Show is being fashioned as the new limited production GLA 45 AMG Edition 1 at this week's Detroit motor show where the series is making its world premiere.

The white colored Edition 1 with the flashy red and silver livery maintains the regular GLA 45 AMG's 2.0-liter turbocharged four with 355hp (360PS) and 450Nm (332 lb-ft), connected to an AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports dual clutch transmission and the AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system, adding styling and aero mods.

Among other things you get with this package is a high-gloss black Aerodynamics kit with larger front splitter, additional flics in the front fascia, and rear airfoil, silver gray/red AMG racing stripes complemented by red highlights on radiator grille, exterior mirrors, diffuser insert and rear wing. The Edition 1 rides on special 20-inch alloy wheels mounted on 235/40 R 20 tires all-round.

Exterior color options for this model are restricted to four options, the cirrus white seen on the display car, cosmos black, polar silver and mountain gray, while the interior is finished in red and black, with exclusive trims.

Both the base GLA 45 AMG and the Edition 1 will go on sale in the USA in the fall of 2014 with prices to be announced.

Place Your Bets: Mercedes C63 AMG Black Series vs Jaguar XKR-S GT vs Aston V12 Vantage S

The following video comparison reunites some of the most hardcore coupes one can think of: the 542hp Jaguar XKR-S GT, the 565hp Aston Martin V12 Vantage S and the 510hp Mercedes C63 AMG Coupe Black Series.

Autocar reviewer Steve Sutcliffe makes no secret of the fact that the Mercedes is one of his all-time favorite cars, so the comparison is all about finding which of the two British cars comes close to the AMG-flavored C-Class Coupe.

On paper, the Aston Martin V12 Vantage S is the fastest, hitting 60 mph (96 km/h) from a standing start in just 3.7 seconds – 0.2 seconds faster than the Jag and 0.5 seconds faster than the Merc. But what happens on the track? You’ll have to hit play on the video posted below to find out.

New Mercedes-Benz C-Class Showcases AMG Package in Leaked Photos

If the styling of the all-new Mercedes-Benz C-Class isn’t considered sporty or exclusive enough by some customers, they will be able to opt for an AMG Line exterior kit.

As the leaked official photos show, the AMG package features a front apron with large air inlets with wire mesh and chrome trim elements, side skirts and rear apron with built-in diffuser. The package appears to be the same one that we saw on the C-Class photographed in Germany .

The AMG Line also includes 18-inch light-alloy wheels in 5-spoke design, painted in high-sheen titanium gray, as well as the sportier radiator grille with integrated Mercedes-Benz star and two louvers in matt iridium silver with chrome inserts.

Also included in the AMG Line Exterior Pack are a lowered sports suspension (by 15mm or 0.6in), perforated front brake discs, large chrome exhaust tips, window surround in polished aluminum and others.

The AMG Line for the C-Class is expected to debut at the Detroit Auto Show.

2015 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Sedan with 4.0L Bi-Turbo V8 Rendered

To the delight of photo manipulators, all three major German premium carmakers, including Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz, are very predictable (to the point of tediousness sometimes) when it comes to the appearance of high-performance versions of their regular models.

As such, imagining the styling of upcoming cars like the next Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG sports saloon is a pretty straightforward process – change the grille, lower the ride height, add model-specific front and rear bumpers, side skirts, bigger alloy wheels and trim details, and you're all set.

Before we leave you to take a closer look at Virtuel Car's digital-made photos of the car, let us tell you that, unlike the latest BMW M3 and M4 that swapped their predecessors' naturally aspirated V8 for a force-fed inline six, Mercedes will continue to offer a V8, but instead of being naturally aspirated, the new 4.0-liter unit is reported to employ the use of twin-turbochargers for close to 500-horses.

Spied: Mercedes-Benz Working On Updates for CLS Series

No, we haven't turned back the clock to the spring of 2012 when Mercedes-Benz was still testing partially camouflaged prototypes before the summer release of the new CLS Shooting Brake.

What's pictured here is a CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake tester sporting some of the changes that the Germans are preparing for the entire range, including the sedan model of the second generation CLS that was launched in early 2011.

Sources from Germany suggest that the CLS will soon gain newer LED headlamp units along with some subtle styling revisions to the front grille, both bumpers and exterior trim, plus new design elements and updated tech features in the cockpit.

It’s not full-blown facelift, but more of a model year update for all CLS body styles and AMG editions, which should be announced within the next 12 months.

Mcchip-DKR Gives Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG More…"Puff"

What you read above in the title is Mcchip-DKR's own words, not ours, and what the German tuner means to say is that, it has made the Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG brisker through a newly developed range of performance upgrades that can push the 2.0-liter turbocharged four's output up to 444HP or 450PS.

In detail, Mcchip plans to offer three engine packages starting from the already available Stage 1 kit that increases the turbo-fed unit's power from 355HP (360PS) and 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) to 396hp (400PS) and 535 Nm (395 lb-ft) respectively, all via a software upgrade.

In February next year, the German firm will release a Stage 2 kit that adds a full sports exhaust system to lift output 414hp (420PS) while retaining the same torque numbers as Stage 1, and a Stage 3 package that completes the goods with a revised turbocharger for a total of 444HP (450PS) and 550 Nm (406 lb-ft).

The other offerings from Mcchip-DKR include KW Clubsport coilovers and new mbDesign KV1 19-inch alloys wrapped in Sport Maxx Race Dunlop tires size 235/35ZR19.
